National Culture?
    Back Forward

Among readings proposed to you in this section, we mention this passage between ironic and critical, about the importance of cultural events in Italian life.

    >Very little, surely very little. I remind a fine anecdote that Enzo Siciliano told Elsa Morante.

One day he heard that all Rome was in holiday because National footbal team won. Elsa Morante sayd about all noise of clacson and flags that people waved in the streets saying: "What are they doing? Are they celebrating the last poems book issued by Sandro Penna?". Enzo Siciliano interpreted it as an hermitic ascetism. In that period Elsa Morante was so involved in her writing that she made a blunder. Maybe, but I like to think that it was an ironic comment. Imagine a world in which a whole city, all Rome, celebrates in the streets, with big flag and horns the last poems book issued by Giudici, Mario Luzzi or Andrea Zanzotto.

It could be really a science fiction scenery. But at the contrary what does it happen ? It happens thet writers are thaught at school a scuola and so they become monuments. Writers become teaching matter not artists. So, if it's true that a nation is just the way in which a community organizes its own enjoy, I don't know how much you consider the school a form of enjoying. So the fact that writers become teaching matter and then duty, that there is someone that says to you that it is necessary and has the punishment instruments too, well, this in my opinion is the contrary of enjoying. When you go to see a movie or to dance or to a party or more simply to walk, nobody asks you the day after about your walking, party, movie. Enjoying doesn't presuppose a final test..
